Achieving net-zero targets & climate stabilization requires better accounting for the immense amount of carbon naturally stored in soils. I propose ‘carbon parks’ as a conservation tool & financial instrument to protect and value carbon-rich ecosystems.
My colleague and I wrote this opinion piece that was recently published. In it, we describe the 'carbon parks' idea a bit more and use the example of peatlands as key ecosystems worth conserving. In essence, because of the way additionality is currently calculated for ecosystem carbon storage services, the immense amounts of carbon stored away in soils isn't worth anything (because nature has done the work). We need a work-around.
